To coincide with the publication of the photobook I Want To Check The Shape Of Trees, an exhibition of the same title was held at Higashi-Kasai 1-11-6 A Warehouse. Responding to the relationship between the spaces of “outside” and “inside the home,” which lies at the core of the photobook, the exhibition sought to create a continuous connection between two distinct forms: the photobook and the exhibition.

In the first room, the spreads from the photobook were presented on the walls as four-page printer’s sheets, prior to being cut and bound. By presenting the photographs in a state in which they did not yet function as individual images, the installation sought to dismantle the structure of the photobook. The fragmented images could only be reassembled through the viewer’s gaze as it moved back and forth across the prints, revealing how the spread—the smallest structural unit of the photobook—is formed through the processes of editing and the physical act of turning pages.

In the second room, photographs removed from the structure of the photobook were presented as individual prints. The installation allowed the photographs to merge with the exhibition space and emerge as images belonging to the outside world. At the same time, prints of varying sizes were used to create a difference in bodily experience between the three-dimensional space of the exhibition and the two-dimensional space of the photobook.

A small room was also constructed within the second room, where photographs taken in a bedroom were displayed. These images relate to an intensely private space and served as the starting point for the series.

Finally, in the loft at the end of the exhibition, a large-scale print was presented as an image that points toward both the relationship between “inside and outside,” explored throughout the exhibition, and photography’s capacity to abstract its subjects.

写真集「 I Want To Check The Shape Of Trees」の出版に伴い、同タイトルの展覧会を東葛西 1-11-6 A倉庫で開催した。
