Solo Exhibition　I Want To Check The Shape Of Trees

To mark the publication of the photobook I Want To Check The Shape Of Trees, an exhibition of the same title was held at A SO-KO, 1-11-6, HIGASHIKASAI.
In response to the relationship between interior and exterior spaces that lies at the core of the photobook, the exhibition attempted a structure in which the two formats—the photobook and the exhibition—move back and forth between each other and connect seamlessly without rupture.

In the first room, spreads from the photobook were presented on the wall as four-up prints prior to trimming, placing the images in a state where they could not be perceived as a single photograph. By doing so, the structure of the photobook was effectively deconstructed. The fragmented images could only be integrated within the viewer’s gaze, revealing how the spread—the fundamental unit of the photobook—is formed through editorial structure and the bodily act of turning pages.

In the second room, photographs detached from the structure of the photobook were presented as individual prints. Through prints of varying sizes, the installation attempted to create a difference in bodily experience between the three-dimensional exhibition space and the two-dimensional space of the photobook. As the photographs merged into the exhibition space and emerged as images belonging to the exterior, the prints were also allowed to undergo subtle physical changes—such as warping and creasing—caused by the temperature and humidity of the space.

Within the second room, a small enclosed space displayed two photographs taken in a bedroom. These images belong to an extremely private space and represent the point of departure for the thinking that gave rise to this series.

In the loft, which concluded the exhibition, a large-scale print was installed as an image that points to both the relationship between interior and exterior explored throughout the exhibition and photography’s capacity to abstract its subject.

写真集「 I Want To Check The Shape Of Trees」の出版に伴い、同タイトルの展覧会を東葛西 1-11-6 A倉庫で開催した。
本展では、写真集の根幹である「外」と「家の中」の空間同士の関係性に呼応するように、写真集と展覧会という二つの形式が断絶なく接続される展示構成を試みた。
 

第一室では、写真集の見開きページを裁断前の四面付プリントとして壁に配置し、写真が一枚の像として成立しない状態を提示することで写真集の構造を解体する構成とした。分断されたイメージは鑑賞者のプリントを往復する視点の中でのみ統合され、「見開き」という写真集における最小単位が編集とページをめくる身体的行為によって成立していることを提示した。
 

第二室では、写真集の構造から切り離された写真を単体プリントとして展示した。様々なサイズのプリントを通して、三次元的な展示空間と写真集の二次元空間との間に身体的経験の差異を生み出すことを試みた。写真が展示空間へと融合し、外部のイメージとして立ち上がる状況を作り出すと同時に、プリントが空間の温度や湿度などの影響を受けて、たわみやシワといった変化を帯びていくことも空間との関係を指し示すものとして受容した。

また第二室の内部には小さな部屋を設け、ベッドルームで撮影された写真を展示した。これらは、本シリーズの起点となった、極めて私的な空間に関係するイメージである。
 

展示の最後に位置するロフトには本展を通して扱ってきた「内と外」の関係と、写真が対象を抽象化していく性質を指し示すイメージとして大判プリントを展示した。
